Designing A Room Around Your Bed

A bed is the centerpiece of every bedroom, but more often than not, it’s an afterthought. This post’s for those out there who want to make the most of their sleep space. All of these tips are amazing for more than just your sleep, so consider it a whole-room renovation. And don’t worry—these suggestions won’t break the bank!

But first things first: what is a bed? Beds are not just places to watch something happen in between your mattress, but rather a place to enjoy something all on its own. A bed should be as much about comfort and relaxation as anything else, which means that it’s part of your living space.

The beauty of organizing around your bed is how quickly you can transform a room into something that feels more grown-up and adult. The first few tips are all about making the most of your bed space, but the rest is all about your living space.

  • A Bed Is Only Half Of Your Living Space

A bed is one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home because it anchors several other key elements, like your couch or recliner, bookshelves and lamps. The way you organize your bedroom will dictate the way you organize your entire space.

  • Pillow-Unit Storage

There’s nothing more important than a comfortable bed, and we know you want to enjoy the good times so we suggest putting all of your throw pillows in one central location.

That can be as simple as a chest of drawers, or, if that doesn’t work for you, try creating a pillow shelf over an already existing dressing table or vanity. Bask in how much easier it makes getting ready every day.

  • Pillow Shops

If you love the look of your beautiful pillows but hate their bulky, no-good-for-anything shape, consider picking up a pillow shaver. If you are crafty, you can create your own. Just staple two pillow forms together over a wooden frame and vacuum seal them so they stay nice and fluffy.

Store these cuties in a basket or box that you can place anywhere.

  • A BED IS NOT A DESK!

Pillows are great for small spaces, but sometimes we want to lay down and read so our eyes need a little distance from the words. That’s where bed desks come in! Bed desks can get expensive but there are plenty of budget-friendly options out there. If you’re handy with tools, consider buying a wooden crate and some wood shelves to put on top of the mattress.

The next time you’re moving, just put the bed frame in that crate and put the mattress in a new box to take it with you. You’ll have tons of space for your laptop or tablet and you can even use the crate as a reading nook.

  • Luggage

Try out one of these adorable handmade luggage pieces for a much cheaper alternative. They’re perfect for under your bed so you can easily store your luggage when it’s not being used.

You can even use it when you’re away on vacation so your things are always at the ready. You can also choose to store them in a closet and keep your ugly luggage bag in the box!

  • A Bed Can Be Just As Much A Place To Read As It Is A Place To Sleep

For those who like to read in bed, we suggest keeping a wooden crate or small bookshelf under the bed. You can store your books, magazines and other reading materials in it so you don’t have to go far for something to read.

For those who prefer a hanging bookshelf, you can easily make a DIY version by mounting wooden boards onto the wall for support.

  • Bed Rest

If you have one of those beds with feet, elevate them. You’ll want to buy some felt or cork pads and place them underneath each foot so that the bed is higher than usual. This not only looks amazing, but also makes it easier to get on and off the bed.

  • LIGHT FITTINGS FOR YOUR BED

If you have a light fixture, consider changing the type of bulbs it’s using to ones that will cast a softer half-light. The Ikea catalog has great lighting options that fit perfectly over your bed.

If you don’t have a light fixture, consider changing out the bedside table lamp. You know what would look great? A candle!

So when you’re choosing a new bed frame, be sure to pair it with some great bedding and lighting so that you can create the perfect sleeping spaces for your great life.
