- Buy second hand furniture – It’s cost saving and eco-friendly, great for people on a budget.
- Stick with quality over quantity, don’t buy tools you won’t use or need just because they’re cheap- Your mind will thank you later when your wallet doesn’t hurt!
- Buy locally, if you get the space and tools: DIY! If not- it’s what we did to make use of the pieces we already owned.
- Don’t be afraid to mix and match – different pieces with different schemes can make an interesting look.
- Don’t feel like buying furniture – Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it’s rubbish.
I’m extremely lucky to have my grandparents that this apartment is situated in. We’ve been friends since I was a kid, moved in together and live right next to each other. At first, I had no idea what kind of furniture we’d have, so I did some research through Craigslist and bought a set of Woodland Benches from my grandparents who are antique collectors.
That set of Woodland Benches have been the perfect addition to our living room. They’ve made it a focal point and cool spot for guests.
I’ve also realized that these benches are really durable, we’ve had a few mishaps with them (i.e. an assortment of pets) but they’re still as sturdy as day one and look to be for a long time as well.
Now that I have my Woodland Benches, I don’t think I could have chosen any better furniture in terms of style for the living room. The wood gives it a rustic look, which perfectly suits our space.
One thing I’m really excited about is to use these benches as a coffee table. I’ve seen a lot of other bloggers use them to make end tables too. I’m thinking of buying a few drink coasters or coasters to give the living room an added touch.
The rustic feel has been quite the inspiration for me, it’s part of the reason why I chose my couch with two “nooks” at either end. Having a space to put my legs up while reading or watching TV (or just a place to shove dirty shoes) has always been something I wanted on a couch. I’m glad I found one that worked out perfectly!
How do you like my corner spot? It’s the perfect place to curl up with a book and some tea, read for hours and then go back to bed again. Seriously, this nook is so cozy!
It’s no surprise that I’ve chosen the antique dresser from my grandparents as well. The antique look is something I’ve always really liked, so this dresser definitely fits perfectly in the space.
I also have a small side table that has been a constant in my apartment since we moved in (that can also be seen below). I had thought that we wouldn’t need it as much living here, but apparently I was wrong. This side table is by far the most used piece of furniture (next to my bed of course!) and has become an essential during my studies. I always have my books, pens, laptop and extra items on this nightstand and it’s always been my reliable friend.
Thanks to my grandparents (and lucky discovery on Craigslist) I finally have a kitchen table that could also be used as a dining table. The previous one didn’t quite fit the bill, so I’ve moved our dining table over here.
When I first moved in here, we didn’t have enough space to have just a dining table. This living room wasn’t really big enough for it, plus the dining was so small that we couldn’t fit more diners in there. So we had to make do with just my grandparents sitting at the table.
It’s not the best living room in the world, but we’ve done a lot with it. I think our cheap furniture has made it a lot more bearable! What do you think?
